Lilian Roberts Author Interview

Comments Off on Lilian Roberts Author Interview Book Reviews, News

Today I am presenting to you another talented author. Lilian Roberts has written a series of young adult romances with Arielle and Sebastian as the main characters. Her books touch upon immortality but at the core they are one big wonderful love story with characters which I want my nieces to take as role models. And I also read three of her books in short succession – so be warned, this is highly addictive reading.

Enough praise. Lilian, please tell us a little about yourself as writer and as person.

My name is Lilian Roberts. I was born, in Athens, Greece and grew up in France. I came to the U.S. to study. Upon graduation from the University of Miami, I accepted a job as an engineer with a large corporation.

College, marriage, the corporate world, and a beloved daughter kept my writing on the back burner for many years. It wasn’t until later on in life that I decided to sit in front of the computer and finally put my thoughts on paper. I am an avid reader and that is the reason I decided to turn my love for reading into a passion for writing.

I live in Atlanta Georgia. I am blessed with a wonderful and supportive family, and a circle of friends who have encouraged me along the way and have tremendous faith in my journey. I play tennis and play the piano for relaxation.

Tell us about your writing history. When was the first time you decided to write and when was the first time you did?

I started to write when I was very young. It was more like role-playing. I wrote stories and pretended that I was one of the characters. In my wildest dreams I never thought that one day I will become an actual author and see my books in print. It is the most extraordinary feeling in the world. It was not until later on in life that I put all those handwritten thoughts into the computer.

Tell us about your first book? How did you decide on the characters, plots and title?

While in college I started to drea

m about a passionate love between two young people from two totally different worlds. What would it be like for a mortal person to fall in love with an immortal and where would it all end? My first character was a stunning immortal Sebastian, who would fall in love with the heroine of my manuscript Arielle, a beautiful your British cooed. The story got clearer and fiercer and it seemed to occupy much of my daily thoughts so I decided that it was time to put all that on paper. When I started to write I was stunned to find that all the other characters in the story just fell in place. I took bits out of my life and bits out of my imagination and made a nice blend to use for one book. But as it turned out when I was finished I had a series of 8 books  “The Immortal Rapture Series”

Do you have an agent or publisher? How did you go about finding one?

I had actually self-published my first four books in the Immortal Rapture series. My publicist was promoting them well, and each of the books made it onto Amazon bestseller lists and kept their place for 4 weeks in a row. We were getting great reviews, and she happened to mention this to someone at her publishing house “Booktrope”. The director looked at my work and loved the idea of the series and forwarded the information about the synopses and sales figures to the Chief of Marketing. She bought my first book, Arielle Immortal Awakening and loved it. Next thing I knew, she was calling me to talk about the series as a whole, and soon after I had a contract. My first book was re-published by Booktrope on February the 10th. They will be releasing one book each month until the whole series is published.

Did anyone influence you / encourage you to become a writer?

As a child I had a huge imagination. It was my mother that encouraged me to put that imagination on paper.

What do your family or friends say about your books. Do they mind you taking so much time to write?

Everyone in my family and my circle of friends loves my books and supports me in every way possible.

Would you say there is a message in your books beyond the story? Do you find it is well received and picked up by the reviewers?

My message to the readers is that when you go with your passion and your vision, you are eventually going to achieve that which will make you happy. When your heart steers you toward your dream, don’t procrastinate, run toward it with every ounce of strength in your body and mind. Arielle accepted Sebastian for who he was, because her heart told her that he was the only man that would make her complete.

Who would you hope plays them in a movie version? download (1)

Ian Somerhalder would be my preference to play Sebastian

Kiera Knightly would be my preference for Arielle

Tell us about your connection to Brighton and France.

I spent many years in France and spent a large amount of time in Brighton during my college years.

You say you are fascinated by Immortality. Can you explain that a bit more?

I was always fascinated by science and the idea of human immortality. From a very young age I envisioned that by the time I reached a mature age, science would have moved leaps and bounds to unearth the incredible secret of immortality. Immortality was one of the subjects that was discussed quite often with my close friends during our college years.  I dreamed that we would be able to achieving immortality in the next six or seven decades, but I knew it was just a dream. I remember staying up until the wee hours of the morning wondering what if… images (1)

Timeless existence! What an astonishing thought. What would it feel like to never get old, never get sick, and remain in love with the man or woman of your dreams for centuries to come?

In our day and time physical immortality is just a dream, but it remains a real goal for science. That is exactly what gave me the motivation to write my books. I will not see immortality in my lifetime and maybe it is all just a theory, but at least I can make it happen in my books.

Which character did you most enjoy writing?

My favorite Character is Sebastian Gaulle.  He is an amazing immortal, over six feet tall, with broad shoulders, sandy hair and mesmerizing emerald eyes. He is stunning and full of passion for Arielle. It is hard to believe that a man like him has been dead for over 500 years.

Did you have any say in your cover art? What do you think of it? Tell us about the artist.

I designed my book covers. I picked the photos and prepare a sample of each cover. Then I hired an artist to make them look professional. As it turned out the fans seem to love them as well.

What is your writing environment like? Do you need silence or music to write?

I like to write in my office. I stay up late after everyone has gone to bed. I seem to be able to think much clearer in the quiet of the night. I do like soft music while I write.

How have you found the experience of self-publishing? What were your highs and lows?

It is not easy to be a self – published author. You have to incur a lot of expenses and there are many painful moments when you want to find the door to success but somehow it is always shut. I believe that if you are determined and persistent you will finally get exactly to where you want to be.

The biggest challenge is handling rejection. I know that my series may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but I always look for the reader to review my books keeping in mind that it is only their personal view. I have been luck overall with reviews but even one that is unfavorable hurts. I think that is the reason that kept me from wanting to publish the series. I was afraid of the reader’s reaction. It took a lot of pushing from family and friends that believe in me to put my thoughts out in the open for everyone to see.

What is your advice to new writers?

Personally I believe that authors need a publicist and/or an agent that will work for him or her and help them promote their work. It is hard to do it alone, but the right person will promote their book, help them find a good publisher and treat them right.

Who are your favourite authors?

Jane Austen, J G Ballard, Emily Brontë, Daphne du Maurier  download (2)

What book are you currently reading and in what format (e-book/paperback/hardcover)?

I am reading for the second time “Rebecca” by Daphne Du Maurier. This is an incredible story of a young innocent clumsy girl who falls in love with the very wealthy and complex Mr de Winter. I was intrigued by the secrets, the obscurity, the suspense and the romance that were hiding behind the walls of Manderley. What a rollercoaster of emotions? I couldn’t believe how I was being affected by her deep emotions of desperation, depression and fear. I loved the book but several times I had to put it down and walk away. I don’t think I have ever done that with any other book.

What three books have you read recently and would recommend?

1) The Portrait of A Lady by Henry James: I found very interesting the use of point of view of his story character. By doing that he was able to explore the heroine’s consciousness and perception. That is something I try to use in my books.

2) The Dark-Hunter vampire series by Sherrilyn Kenyon: I loved the fact that she created soulless guardians to protect humans from those who wish to destroy mankind.

3) “Wuthering Heights” by Emily Brontë: Her amazing novel left me mesmerized. Heathcliff’s orphaned status, his undying love for Catherine, his ambiguous position in society, the physical and mental cruelty he endured, and finally his revenge, are a stunning mixture of emotions that the author interweaved masterfully throughout the story.

What books have you read more than once or want to read again?

Pride and Prejudice; Rebecca; Sense and Sensibility; Anna Karenina

What is your life like outside of writing?

My life outside of writing is chaotic. I am a wife and a mother. I am an engineer for a large corporation and work full time. I play tennis weekly and belong to 4 different book clubs attending weekly meetings. That leaves only the very late hours for writing, so that is what I do. I stay up very late and write. Trying to find the quiet moments I need to work on my manuscript is the most challenging part in my life.

What makes you laugh? images (2)

Overall, I am a very happy individual, so it does not take much to make me laugh. But I love to watch old funny sitcoms.

What song would you pick to go with your book?

Immortality by Celine Dion

How do you handle criticism of your work?

I do not pay attention to reviews any longer. I have finally come to terms with the fact that I do not write to please everyone. My books will be loved by some and hated by others. That is a true fact for all books and all authors.

What are you working on now?

I am working on a new stand-alone novel Historic/Romance about English Regency

October of 2013 I was offered a contract by a wonderful publishing company Booktrope out of Seattle Washington. They wanted the whole series and they will be re-releasing the first 4 books under Booktrope. They already re-release “Arielle Immortal Awakening” on February 10th 2014 and will I was to releasing one book each month. There are a total of 8 volumes in the Immortal Rapture series.

All of the above four novels have appeared on Amazon’s top 100 list three times and held their place for 4 weeks.

ARIELLE IMMORTAL AWAKENING  is the first book in the series:

“Arielle: Immortal Awakening (Immortal Rapture, #1)” by Lilian Roberts is a beautifully written paranormal romance. Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000031_00005]
The book starts with 16 year old Arielle and two of her friends experimenting with psychic powers and mediumship and opening themselves up to the world of spirits.
As the three school friends come back from their summer break they encounter more of that world, some of it through the men they fall for. Sadly not all of this is good.
The characters of Arielle’s friends are well chosen as they allow the plot to spread out and to explore the experiences from slightly different angles.
On her vacation in France Arielle herself falls for Sebastian, an immortal, which becomes the main story.
The book incorprates a lot of supernatural / paranormal elements, e.g. witch craft and a place between this world and the next. With its wide ranging themes the book stands out from one trick ponies and books limited to only one idea.
This is a wonderful and accomplished fantasy novel with a truly beautiful love story at its heart.

A mortal soul…From the time college co-ed Arielle Lloyd had been young, she had been able to hear the thoughts and feel the pain of certain others, and those she comes to think of as her special group. One friend’s dabbling with spells and magic showed her the power of love that can endure beyond the grave. But another friend’s terrifying encounter with a warlock left Arielle wary of those who claim otherworldly powers. On holiday in the south of France, a chance encounter could change her mind. Or could cost her life.

An Immortal man…Sebastian Gaulle is the wealthy, handsome owner of an international company. He is also an Immortal. For five centuries he has sought the one soul who can fulfill his dreams of everlasting love. Then he meets Arielle, whose heart calls out to him like no other.

A timeless love…Sebastian has made his choice clear. But jealous Immortals from his past threaten retaliation. They have vowed to destroy any woman who becomes involved with him. In spite of the powerful protection amulet Sebastian gives Arielle, death stalks their newfound love. Their love may be eternal, but they may be running out of time.

“Arielle Immortal Seduction (Immortal Rapture Series)” by Lilian Roberts is another wonderful romance novel about the love between young Arielle and Immortal Sebastian.
While Sebastian is in New Zealand Arielle continues going to school in Brighton and misses him terribly. She has good friends, male and female, but she aches for his return.  Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000031_00006]
This second book in the series is all about seduction – as the title says: Unwanted seducation, unreciprocated feelings and longed for seduction. There are many men who desire Arielle and she has her hands full keeping them at bay, saving herself for Sebastian. The book is full of passionate love, affection, friendship and rivalry and is a great example of a well written teenage love story.

Sebastian is 500 years old but there are many more paranormal/ supernatural elements in this beautifully told story. The youthful characters are great role models who resist temptations and who hold their own.

This series is strong teenage / young adult fiction with drama, passion and the stuff that dreams are made of.

A time of waiting…Arielle Lloyd has found the love of her life, but his business as the owner of an international company calls him away. She longs for Sebastian, but stays busy with school, and finds comfort in spending time with her best friends, Gabby and Eva. It is during Sebastian’s absence that a stranger enters Arielle’s life at the university and threatens to shatter her joy with a vicious assault.

A time of renewal…The return of Sebastian Gaulle, Arielle’s Immortal love, brings a return of joy. Her terrifying experience has her rethinking her vow of remaining chaste until marriage. Arielle already knows Sebastian is the one man she will love for eternity. Sebastian has longed for Arielle, like no other. He has carried a ring in his pocket for her almost from the first moment they met. He’s only waiting for the right moment to pledge his eternal love for her.

A time of danger…But Sebastian’s past still threatens their future. A trio of jealous Immortal women has vowed Sebastian will belong to no other woman for centuries to come. Arielle, Sebastian, and their friends must join together to fight off the Immortals bent on utter destruction, if they are ever to find their eternal happiness.

An interlude in paradise…St. Jean De Luz, in the south of France, is the gorgeous setting of one of Sebastian Gaulle’s family estates. It is to this lush place that the Immortal takes his love, Arielle Brown, and her friends, to relax and spend their holiday exploring the surroundings and learning about his family’s history.

A snake in the garden…There is no safety in this paradise, however, as Sebastian’s past continues to haunt him. The Immortal, Annabel, still lusts for vengeance on Sebastian and seeks to destroy his new love. While exploring, Arielle’s life is endangered when she discovers dangerous hidden strangers occupying the house.

Evil that will not die…Trapped, threatened, and nearing her last breath, Arielle must call on the powerful magic of her friend, Eva, for help. Sebastian must rally his Immortal friends and family to protect his love and expel the evil before his paradise is forever lost.

A fatal night….College co-ed Arielle Lloyd is on vacation with her immortal love, Sebastian Gaulle, when they receive word of a dreadful accident. Her dear friend Gabrielle hovers near death. But it’s much worse for her beloved friends, Eva and Ian. In spite of Eva’s magical abilities, their lives have been cut tragically short.

An immortal choice…Troy Vasser’s only love is Gabrielle, but on the night of the accident, his deepest concern is for their dying friends. While the life force within Ian and Eva flickered dangerously low, Troy had to make a hard choice. He could either let them die or lose their humanity and live as immortals. So he did the only thing he could: he gave them immortality. Now it is up to Arielle to break the news to Eva before the transformation is complete.

A quest for vengeance…Danger continues to stalk Arielle’s life. Unknown to her, her new professor is an immortal, and he is furious when he discovers that Arielle is wearing an amulet, that should be owned by immortals only. Sebastian’s nemesis, Annabel, has also not given on up on her quest to destroy Arielle. What Annabel doesn’t realize is that Arielle’s circle of friends has drastically changed. There are two newly minted immortals that adore her and have vowed to protect her.
