Brenda Perlin: Shattered Reality (Brooklyn and Bo Chronicles)

Comments Off on Brenda Perlin: Shattered Reality (Brooklyn and Bo Chronicles) Book Reviews

Today I am introducing Brenda Perlin, a talented writer and relentless reader and supporter of others. I came across her Brooklyn and Bo Chronicles Series through a recommendation and was taken in by it right away.
Here is my review of book one before I get to the interview with Brenda.

“Shattered Reality” by Brenda Perlin is the story of one woman’s search for happiness and for a home that will finally allow her to lead the life she deserves. Shattered Reality-cover-2-FINAL

The beginning point of this moving tale is a moment in Brooklyn’s (our protagonist) life after she has left her husband of ’15 tedious years’ to be with someone she actually loves.
With that in mind we then go back in time to see how Brooklyn’s childhood and family life have formed and shaped her. The drama and hardship that Brooklyn went through prior to this point and up to the end of her marriage are not presented as justification or explanation for her adultery and subsequent alleged ‘home wrecking’.
To me they show a woman who has for far too long done what she thought she ought to do and what was expected of her, or what would bring her happiness. Yet, through an unexpected illness Brooklyn reaches a new understanding of life and her decision to leave her husband is not taken lightly.
The book is written with a great sensitivity and reflection and challenges us all to think about the choices we make.
Brooklyn and her new man however have to fight their ex spouses before they can begin their life together and make a new home for themselves.
The book is written in a marvellous realistic style that makes it almost hard to believe that this should be fiction and not a memoir, a very powerful tool that does not miss its target.
A thought provoking and important read

Interview with Brenda:

Tell us a little about yourself as writer and a person.

I am  just an Orange County Housewife without a husband. I had a husband after moving to Orange County but things changed for the worse. Before moving  we lived in Los Angeles with our dogs. I was a personal trainer for many years and never really thought I would start writing again. That was something I stopped years before I planned to get married. When I was engaged and set to be a bride that was when I started writing again.

What made you become a writer? Have you always written? scan0001-2

In my earlier years I wrote every single day. I would go to neighborhood

coffee shop and sit there for hours writing on paper napkins. I wrote for hour on end. Funny, I can’t ever remember getting kicked out for over staying my welcome. I think when you are young you can get away with a lot more.

Is there anything auto-biographical in the books?

EVERYTHING…except names, places and dates.

My first book is Shattered Reality which is a part of my trilogy, Brooklyn and Bo Chronicles. Book two is Burnt Promises which continues the journey of Brooklyn and her boyfriend Bo.

This story took on a life of it’s own and pretty much wrote itself. I mean, it all happened. I just had to put it down on paper. It’s still pretty shocking to me, I mean, this is my life. Not quite what I expected but I guess life is like that. There are some things you just can’t make up. Reality, at least my reality has been crazier than most fiction books I have read.

Which of your books is your favourite?

I am not there yet. I think my upcoming release “Fractured Vows WILL be my fav. Since it is not based on my life it is more comfortable for me to read. I like that it is from a males point of view rather than my own.

Who would play the characters in a film?

This is the easiest question yet Christoph. I have that on my Pinterest page…

What are your next projects? Tell us about your other books.

I have to do is get book three of Brooklyn and Bo Chronicles edited and ready to go. Also in the next few weeks I will be self-publishing a children’s book, Ty the Bull with Kim Mutch Emerson and my boyfriend’s eleven year old grandson Rex. This is dear to my heart. Kim brilliantly added the fictional parts to make this story one of inspiration. Rex helped with the story and did the illustrations which I am excited about. It would be nice if something could be done to protect children from bullies. It’s an old age problem that has not improved in the least since I was a kid. Children need to be protected rather than hurt. They need their self-esteem lifted instead of dragged down by a bully.

What is your life like? What do you do for pleasure and work when you are not writing?

Well, I just got off a ship that was headed towards Bora Bora. We set sail last week planning to be away for 29 days but the trip was cut short when we got word that my boyfriend’s dad fell and was in the hospital. That has been a bit of a spoiler but I am happy to report that his dad Earl is doing surprisingly well. All the prayers from my great Facebook friends must have helped. So grateful.

We hope to plan something else as soon as we feel more comfortable going away again. I mean, there is NOTHING better than travel. Yes, LOVE is the best and then travel. You can be anything you want when you jet out to undiscovered territory. It is just a freeing experience. I feel blessed to have the opportunity to travel and to a have a great love to travel with.

Who are your literary influences? What are your favourite books/ films/ albums?

My favorite movie might always be Cinema Paradiso. I love the innocence and the coming of age story that is so heart warming. I have so many favorite albums but if I had to say one it would be Pearl Jam, Ten. I just remember the feeling I got when I first listened to that album. Simply brilliant.

As far as books, Prince of Tides might be my favorite, if that is even possible.. I love the poetic and honest writing of Pat Conroy. I actually have many influences but reading good writing really makes a difference in your own writing. You, for instance. your beautiful writing could never be reproduced but I can dream. Can’t I.

Also, John Emil Augustine has written similar style books to mine as they are also from real life. From the Abyss series is an emotional account of a man’s quest at creating a better life. What he goes through to get there is a heart-wrenching journey. One of strength, faith and perseverance. His honesty and use of language is stunning. So nice to know so many talented people!

What would your friends tell us if we asked for your best and your oddest qualities?

I am a quirky girl. I like to act silly and laugh a lot. Can be a bit loud and I do talk really fast. I do think they would say I have a good heart. Well, my ex-husband would not say that at all but my friends would. We are so many different things to so many different people. I hope to be the best person I can be. I do love people and sometimes I do care too much, if that is possible.

What are your favourite animal/ colour/ outdoor activity?

When I talked about LOVE and TRAVEL I didn’t mention that DOGS were right up there. We just rescued an 7 month old German Shepherd. Named him Ty after the children’s book. He will soon be the love of my life. I am certain about that.

Have always loved the color green but now I am loving cobalt blue the best. Lucky number has always been 5 and as far as outdoor activity does looking at the ocean count as an outdoor activity? I know it lacks the activity part but I love the ocean!

What would you take to a remote island? Burnt Promises-cover-FINAL

Food is very important. Besides the dog and the boyfriend there would have to be plenty of food. Funny, the first thing that comes to mind are Swedish fish candy. I know that sounds silly but that has been my favorite since childhood.

What are you writing at the moment and where would we find out about your next projects?

Please watch for Ty the Bull to be released on amazon.com. Maybe if you would be so kind you would join the blog. It’s not just for kids…http://tythebull.com.

Later my third book in the Brooklyn and Bo Chronicles, Fractured Vows is coming! Can’t wait until I feel good enough to release it into the universe. That will be an extraordinary feeling!!! And by the way, I want to congratulate you Christoph on your upcoming release, Time to Let Go. Can’t wait to read this book. You are so wildly talented!

Thank you for having me on your blog Christoph. You are such a gentleman!
